Meet the Designer Behind 5000 North Ocean’s Coastal Contemporary Style
POSTED ON April 3, 2018 - 5000 North Ocean
5000 North Ocean, Singer Island’s newest oceanfront tower, is setting a new standard for coastal contemporary design. We recently spoke to Bob Martin, the man behind the design and the president of The Decorator’s Unlimited. Kolter Urban tapped into Martin’s expertise for the floorplan design, residence interior finishes, as well as the design of the building’s common area amenities.

What makes living at 5000 North Ocean so unique?
The airiness of the building is really what’s remarkable–a lot of glass and fenestration everywhere you go. The motif of the building will be elegant with a contemporary edge to it, without being too edgy. The market has changed and people are looking for clean and light and bright, and straighter lines in the furnishings, the architecture and the interior spaces. Every residence offers all floor-to-ceiling glass, so everything is view-centric, looking out to the ocean and to the wind-swept beaches that are just beautiful there on Singer Island.
What’s insight did you bring as a member of the design team?
Our goal for the design of the building itself and the residences was to really focus on how people live today. People want open spaces, less compartmentalized living. They love to entertain, not only in the kitchen but the primary living area, and these areas need to be in sync with one another. People today want that feeling of not wasting space and not wasting energy on spaces that they don’t really use. We don’t see a desire for very formal living rooms and formal dining rooms– those days have kind of gone by the way side. The design captures the spirit of being a little more carefree in how we live. Even though we entertain a lot, we go out a lot, and the residences allow people to entertain, yet live any way they want in these units.
What will we see in the finishes at 5000 North Ocean?
From the standpoint of the design and the finishes, I think we were successful in providing a wide range of choices for the homeowners, while maintaining a high level of quality. We’re using larger format porcelain, very clean cabinet design and we’re mixing mediums in kitchens. Many of the kitchens combine two materials, not just one. We’re mixing a wood material with a high gloss white, and it’s been very well received at Water Club (Kolter’s waterfront condominium in North Palm Beach). We have also demonstrated this in the model kitchen on display at the sales center at 5000. People like the mixture of colors and materials in the kitchens. They like the waterfall countertops. They like the ease of maintenance of the quartz. They are very resilient â they don’t stain. They can withstand orange juice, and acids and vinegar, tomato sauce and red wine. People find that they are not beholden to what the can do or can’t do in their kitchens.
How is Kolter bringing something new to oceanfront home design?
Kolter has really been very in tuned to having larger living spaces outside. These floorplans are literally mansions or homes in the sky. You have the same kind of outdoor living space that you would be afforded if you had a single-family home. The oceanfront buildings of the 80s and 90s had minimal terraces, balconies really. Kolter has evolved the architectural design considerably. They put a great deal of emphasis on outdoor living spaces–ample spaces, multiple terraces that are deep enough to accommodate real furniture. Chaise lounges, dining room tables, seating groups of different sizes and shapes.
The furniture manufacturers have been very in tuned with this trend. They have created new furniture lines with powder-coated aluminum and resins that are very salt and sun resistant. They have really unbelievable outdoor fabrics. So the outdoor living spaces on these terraces really become a natural extension of the indoor living spaces. The whole premise is that on a delightful day like today, you can literally open up all those beautiful pocket sliders and engage both the inside with the outside and have it to be a seamless living space.
